Mental Health Vs. Mental Illness
Professionals use the terms mental health and mental illness often and yet some people are unaware of their differences.
"(Mental Health)...is a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his/her own potential and can cope with the normal stressors of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
World Health Organization
Three of the most relevant determinants of mental health are:
- Social inclusion
- Freedom from Discrimination
- Violence and Access to Economic Resources
In this way, Mental Health refers to a balance of all areas of our life: social, physical, spiritual, economic and mental.
Mental Illness is a recognizable, medically diagnosed illness. Mental illness causes significant cognitive, affective or relational impairment in one’s life. There can be biological, developmental and or psychosocial factors involved. Most often mental illness can be managed using prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
A Healthy Mind
Everyone has some level of mental health throughout his or her life, which is similar to our physical health. On the other hand, it is possible to be without a mental illness. Someone can be mentally healthy with a mental illness and some can have poor mental health without a mental illness. Some mental health issues and/or mental illness can significantly impair one’s ability to sleep, exercise, and eat or behave. Depending on where one is at with their mental health or mental illness, when there is a substantial negative impact in one’s life relationally, emotionally and mentally our counselling services can assist people to regain and re-engage their life’s potential.
"Mindsight is the ability for the human mind to see itself. It is a powerful lens through which we can understand our inner lives with more clarity, transform the brain, and enhance our relationships with others"
Dr. Dan Siegel
Our counselling team works with individuals, families and couples to assist them in understanding the process of transforming their brains and life into a healthy state.
