Grief + Loss
Grief and Loss
Grief is the experience of loss. Most often grief is connected to the loss of a loved one and yet there can be many other experiences of loss in our lives. Some of these can include loss of a job, home, relationship and health. People respond to grief in a variety of ways with different thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Many people struggling with grief can have difficulties with sleep, eating and exercise impacting their ability to manage life. There is a plethora of emotions people can feel along with loss: shock, sad, angry, scared, worried or confused. The more significant the relationship, the more intense the emotions felt. Some people try to numb the feelings while others can feel a sense of peace or even relief after the loss.
There is no right or wrong way to grieve; grieving is a personal process. People make sense of it in their own way and at their own pace. Talking with a counsellor can play an integral role in assisting people to make sense and deepen their understanding of their grieving process.
